Southside Bicycle Day
Hundreds of families lined up to learn the latest about bicycling at the 3rd Annual Southside Bicycle Day, Saturday, June 21st at Kosciuszko Park (7th & Lincoln Ave., Milwaukee), 10am-1pm. The event was sponsored by Sixteenth Street Community Health Center (SSCHC) and featured free bike checkups, bike rides through the park, free food, and free raffles for bikes, locks, water bottles and t-shirts. Several bicycle advocacy organizations were also there to share information about bike safety and cycling routes. I was there too, riding to Kosciuszko Park from the Discovery World bike station on the actual bike share bicycle, to introduce Midwest Bike Share’s new bike share system. Two young translators were with me the entire event, enthusiastically translating information about bike share and how it works to Spanish-speaking residents.
While some visitors were already familiar with bike share, for many visitors this was the first time they had heard of bike share and the response was overwhelmingly positive. Cycling is increasingly popular in the Latino community for its ease of use, affordability, and health benefits. Many parents were also excited about the possibility of their teenage children having an affordable, healthy option of getting around town and exploring the city.
Both the translators and I encouraged visitors to check out the bike itself, which was parked right next to our table, and to complete an on-line survey (available in both English and Spanish). Midwest Bike Share wants to know everyone’s opinion about bike share in Milwaukee, including how to make it affordable and accessible and where people want bike stations placed in their community. Flyers (in both English and Spanish) containing the survey link were given to all visitors. It also included contact information for more information. At the end of the on-line survey, people have the option of providing their email address to get the latest news about Midwest Bike Share.

SCHC is one of the major promoters of cycling on Milwaukee’s south side, with numerous events encouraging cycling as a safe, affordable, healthy, and fun option for both individuals and families.
